Summary/Abstract: The nationalization of private schools undertaken by the Albanian government during 1933-1934, which aimed at the nationalization of education and its transformation to a means of strengthening the Albanian national consciousness of the pupils, came across a strong resistance within the country by the Greek minority and the Catholic Church and in the international arena by Greece, Italy and Vatican. Thus a new tension arouse, especially between Greece and Albania. In these polemics got involved even British diplomats in Albania and a bit less the Foreign Office in London. The British officials tried to advice the Albanian government to be as mature as possible towards the Greek minority and to avoid any action of nationalist inspiration that could aggravate the relations with Greece. In this article are presented in detail the British-Albanian debates on this matter as well as the influence the British officials had in the attitude of the Albanian government. This problem is elaborated for the first time and is broadly based on British and Albanian documentary sources.
