Summary/Abstract: Definitions of the object of enquiry of translatology veer between two aspects situated on different planes: translation as art and as a sum of techniques. This paper raises a series of questions regarding the role of theoretical linguistics in the teaching of translation studies in the field of Applied Modern Languages. It makes a case for the importance of grounding the otherwise predominantly applied didactic process into a solid theoretical foundation, pointing to the difficulties involved in adequately achieving this in relation to each particular discipline, as well as the exigencies of a balanced theoretical and applied linguistics representation.
