Summary/Abstract: Romania, situated at the crossroads between the East and the West, was an important location in the conflicts between the great powers, both as a result of its geographical position and of its natural resources. The entry of Romania into the Triple Alliance, in 1883, strenghtened this group and ensured a long period of peace to Romania. In response, Romania had to defend the South-Eastern flank of the Alliance.Consequently, a chain of fortifications started in Bucharest, continued in Galaţi, Focşani and Nămoloasa, following Dobrogea with Cernavoda and Constanţa. According to the strategists and tactics of the time, it aimed at preventing the enemy from entering Bucharest and advancing towards Western Europe. In this paper we will present only the fortified line from Nămoloasa, namely the bridge head with the batteries from Hanu Conachi, Galati County. The building conception, the unique character, their relations to the personalities of the age, their present material condition represented the reasons to study them, for a deeper understanding of the tumultuous past of Europe and, consequently, of Romania.
