Summary/Abstract: Ryczek discusses the notion of the lyrical character in Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski’s poetics (Characteres lyrici, seu Horatius et Pindarus). Sarbiewski, a famous poet and teacher of rhetoric at the Jesuit colleges, broadened the scope of this concept so that it might include not only different stylistic variants of lyric discourse (forms, types, variants and manners of speaking, such as apsychologia and chronicopoeia) but also the rhetorical prescriptions regulating them (headings and thematic indexes). He used the concept both as a rhetorical category rooted in the terminology of elocutio and as a meta-rhetorical category allowing to bring order into the precepts of the given art.
