Summary/Abstract: Tiberiu Olah is one of the most important Romanian composers of the XX century. Known for his chamber, symphonic and film music, his “Brâncuși cycle” reached beyond Romanian borders, and Michel the Brave Suite is by far the most famous piece he composed. Sonatina for violin and piano was composed in 1952-53, during his studies at the “P. I. Tchaikovsky” Conservatory in Moscow. After reviewing it in 1963, the composer received the “Geoge Enescu” Prize given by the Romanian Academy. It is a work paying tribute to Romanian folk music. Loyal to the set of principles that he would later develop in his study ”Folclor și esență” (“Folklore and essence”), Tiberiu Olah employs specific composition techniques to shape the folkloric musical material, of which he has first abstracted the melodic and rhythmic essence, in order to fit it into a new type of musical language: art music.
