Summary/Abstract: The report presents, for the first time in Bulgaria, a psychological characterization of recidivist offenders who have been subjected to imprisonment for committing thefts, with the help of the main scale of the Dark Triad construction. For the purposes of the empirical research, the short version of the Dark Triad questionnaire was used, with 27 statements, 9 items for each of the personality characteristics studied: Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy. The statistical processing of empirical data with SPSS includes a frequency analysis, Mann-Whitney test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. 80 convicted persons were surveyed, 30 of whom were women. 40 of these were recidivists convicted of thefts, and 40 prisoners were convicted once for thefts or other acts.Thieves have higher levels of Machiavellianism and narcissism compared to the other perpetrators. They are characterized by increased pragmatism, egocentrism, emotional coolness, developed manipulation, pronounced attitudes of self-demonstration and superiority. Women-recidivists have no lower scores than men on the scale of psychopathy. They are also characterized with anxiety, impulsiveness and disregard for social norms. The results of the study enrich the views of the psychological characteristics of recidivist thieves which are important for the police and penitentiary activities carried out with them.
