Summary/Abstract: The concept of intertextuality, introduced by Julia Kristeva in Séméiôtiké (1969) and used by many literary theorizers, has practically blown up the possibilities in literary theory, since the readers can discover infinite relationships between the texts, even though, as Umberto Eco underlined, many of them may be accidental. This paper is intended to highlight the instances of intertextuality in two novels written in the same language – Spanish –,by two distinguished authors, but in two different countries –Spain and Argentina –, and by means of distinct literary devices, even though they were not written in very different periods of time, since only twenty-three years passed between their publications: Lo prohibido by Benito Pérez Galdós and Historia de un amor turbio by Horacio Quiroga. The two protagonists share many qualities, and the two plots revolve around their dealings with three sisters. Therefore the plot of the two novels perfectly allows for an intertextual reading.
