Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article is the broad and narrow understanding of the phraseology. In this connection are examined the criteria for the classification of the phrasing units and the rhetorical code, on the basis of which a large part of the units in the phraseology are differentiated. Attention is paid on the rhetorical code, on the basis of which a large part of the phrasing units are defined - metaphor, metonymymus, hyperbola and others. The author comes to the conclusion that the constraints imposed by the narrow concept, are not always right.
