Summary/Abstract: Excessive consumption, mass production or short-term exploitation of environmental resources are phenomena that are more and more often appearing in the space of social discussion related to responsibility, especially business responsibility. On the other hand, the company’s leading goal is to maximise profits and build a competitive advantage on the market, which is often perceived as acting in contradiction with sustainable management for the sake of the environment and society. A common point of both these areas, which are in some contradiction, are green innovations or broadly understood innovations supporting sustainable development. The article aims to analyse the issue of environmental innovations. The article discusses the innovative activity of Polish enterprises with particular emphasis on SMEs and the benefits of undertaking innovative activities for sustainable development on the example of large enterprises. The author used literature review and the desk research method based on scientific and science publications, statements and institutional reports as well as stock market reports. The article also contains conclusions and recommendations.
