Summary/Abstract: Entrepreneurial activity of women is still at a lower level than entrepreneurial activity of men. Moreover, women`s road to success in business is more time-consuming and requires from women much more effort than is required in the case of men’s career. This phenomenon also occurs in the field of family businesses, in which the majority of owners/co-owners are men. The causes of lower entrepreneurial activity of women in comparison with men lie in the attitude of women as well as (to a greater extent) in the low share of the partnership family model in relation to the patriarchal model and other external barriers (such as stereotypes, education, etc.). As shown by numerous studies, women have to face specific requirements to enhance their role in management. However, despite the existing both procedural and legal arrangements, women’s access to leadership positions is still hampered. Additionally, analysing the situation in Poland, the change of the situation of women in the labour market, after the country’s access into the European Union, is practically imperceptible or insignificant, despite the strongly emphasised policy of equal opportunities, especially in projects co-financed by the Structural Funds. The paper aims to (1) indicate factors motivating women to make decisions about running a business and managing a company/an organisational unit (2) identify barriers for women’s professional success, and then answer the question how to eliminate the indicated problem and improve incentives.
