Summary/Abstract: Due to the ongoing process of globalization of the world economy and technological progress, internationalization has become a common strategy of the development, not only for medium and big enterprises, but as well for micro and small companies. However, main ownership advantages, which are necessary for successful foreign investments, differ significantly among the companies of different size. Therefore, the aim of the article is to identify and assess the main competitive advantages of micro and small enterprises which trigger their process of active internationalization (FDI). The survey has been conducted on the basis of questionnaire addressed to companies located in the region of Lodz. Main findings show that micro and small enterprises followed varied modes of internationalization (step-by-step paths vs. spontaneous internationalization), but most of them do not enjoy a dominant competitive position either on the home or foreign market. Main advantages are related to the human capital (elasticity, client service, know-how) and good quality of goods. What is most important, however, is that FDI allow long-term development of a mother-company and contribute to the strengthening of its market value in both the local, national, and international.
