Summary/Abstract: Cooperation between science and business is an important factor of the development of regions and enhancing their innovation. It is also a driving force of modern competition. Knowledge transfer and its commercialization bring many benefits. It seems clear that the academic nature of science should be replaced by science corresponding to the real needs of the market and economy. This science should offer a theory which will have practical implications. Therefore, there are questions about the forms and methods of science linkages with other important areas of the economy such as manufacturing, trade, finance, and even the aspects of corporate social responsibility. The purpose of this article is to present the specificity in cooperation between science and business in the process of commercialization, transfer and exchange of knowledge. The literature review will answer questions about the nature of the linkages between universities and businesses, reasons for cooperation and the most important barriers of collaboration.
