Role of formal environmental management systems in contemporary world economy

Summary/Abstract: In the conditions of rising global environmental threats and internationalization of business the idea of implementation and functioning of environmental management system in enterprises is getting more popular. This new concept has changed from an add-on function to an integral part of business operations and has been designed to introduce environmental improvement into every aspect of company’s operations. It offers an organized approach to manage environmental issues. The main aim of the article is to present the role and benefits of implementation and functioning of formal EMS compliant with the ISO 14001 standard and EMAS (in force only in the EU countries), their scale, problems and meaning for companies functioning in the contemporary globalizing world.
