Summary/Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the theoretical formulations in relation to mother language communication as one of the key competences and the training in Bulgarian language and literature and an empirical study through a didactic test of the level of formation of the linguistic and literature competences of pupils in IV grade. The test consists of three parts - dictation, reading comprehension, and a language competence test. It indicates strengths and weaknesses in mastering the curriculum. There are comments on the probable causes of the pupils’ difficulties. The analysis indicates possible ways to overcome them. Concrete conclusions are made.
