Summary/Abstract: This text is about American public diplomacy and its role in the war against terrorism. The author analyzes the bases, main fields and instruments of public diplomacy. Public diplomacy is a means of soft power and is very often combined with hard power, which refers to military power. Hard power is used for short-term goals, whereas soft power is used in the long run. A necessary condition for efficient public diplomacy is cultural diplomacy. As one of the most important fields of public diplomacy its goal is to make contacts and strengthen understanding among individuals by means of cultural familiarization. Dissemination of ideas is one of the basic means of fighting for hearts and souls, and this could not be done without the mass media. A key goal of the US administration is to affect public opinion in the Middle East, especially among young population, thus making them adopt American and/or Western attitudes toward terrorism.
