Idiomatic expressions with nationalities and names of places

Summary/Abstract: In this article, I discuss the idiomatic expressions referring to nationalities and names of places. As we know, when learning a new language, we discover a new aspect of that language: idiomatic expressions. The first thing we do is search for the equivalent expression in our language and then ask our teacher or ourselves what it means, in what historical context that idiomatic expression was created when it first started being used, and what its original meaning was. Idiomatic expressions are proof of the verbal character of every language, and thanks to them we can see the differences between nations. Therefore, idiomatic expressions make every language unique. We can say that in these expressions we can see the reflection of others, in our case, the reflection of other nations, which are labelled from our point of view. In this paper, I will show that sometimes we have a different point of view when perceiving other nations, although Spanish and Romanian are Latin languages. The idiomatic expressions referring to nationalities and names of places are after all a specific characteristic of that nation or place. But we must keep in mind the historical background of that expression and the circumstances in which it was created, because, over the years, things change. Social progress is made, the context of using the expression changes, but the idiomatic expression preserves its original meaning.
