Summary/Abstract: In the study, I present the learning paths of learners taking part in public education along two categorisational logics. On the one hand, I follow the continuity of progress, and on the other hand, the paths of groups based on performance and social background from grade 6 to grade 10. The binary logistic regression analysis showed that the study groups differed significantly in terms of institutional background, performance, social background, learning difficulties and (characteristics of) origin. There are also large differences between the groups regarding the direction of secondary education, which can be traced back to the social background rather than the performance. The bases of the analysis are the linked student databases of Hungarian National Assessment of Basic Competencies 2011–2017.
