Summary/Abstract: The Enlightenment meant not only a change of old mentalities, but the establishment of a new method of analysing the concepts of human rights and freedom. These ideas had a major role for South-Eastern European countries, including the Romanian Principalities, Transylvania and Bukovina. The new concepts were opposed to the conservatism protected by the Ottoman Empire. Illuminist ideas spread first to Transylvania, Banat and Bukovina, because the convergences of these two provinces with the Western world had proved tighter. The Greeks created a larger network in the countries of South-Eastern Europe, as an intense commercial activity was carried on in Russia, the Danubian Principalities, Bulgaria and Serbia. Unfortunately, this trend did not result in achieving a unit of action in the fight against the Ottoman Empire. The connections between Greek scholars, and their Romanian, Serbian, Bulgarian counterparts were modest.
