Summary/Abstract: In the Sejny (Augustów) Diocese in the second half of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century one of the pastoral issues was what language was to be used in supplementary services. In the Lithuanian and mixed parishes of the diocese the process of strengthening of the Lithuanian language in the supplementary services took place. In the mixed parishes this evoked the opposition of the faithful of Polish nationality. At the beginning of the XX century Catholic priests became actively involved in the social- -cultural life which was tightly connected with the national revival of the Lithuanians. The more massive integration into social-cultural activities was tied to with the organization of the shipment and distribution of illegal Lithuanian printed texts. The wider possibilities of cultural activities arose at the beginning of XX century. In this period the social activeness of the clergy was expressed mostly by the participation in the activities of societies. The Lithuanian priests of the Sejny (Augustów) Diocese participated especially in the activities of the education and charity society “Žiburys” (“Lights”). One of the most important expressions of the cultural and, at the same time, intellectual activities was the founding of a printing house in the diocese’s center in Sejny and the printing of the weekly “Šaltinis” (“Source”).
