Summary/Abstract: The migration of Romanians to America is looked upon as a social phenomenon and as an integral part of the European process, triggered by socio-economic reasons such as poverty and lack of arable land, which influenced decisively their departure across the ocean. “The American mirage”, a widespread notion at the time, was also important, as was the growing American economy perceived as a new Eldorado by the inhabitants of most European countries. Whether for a limited or an indefinite period, the migration affected the entire population of Romania, both the emigrants and their families left behind, provoking social, economic, and demographic consequences, but especially this phenomenon influenced the individual and collective mentality.
