Summary/Abstract: The iconostasis painting of Zamfira Monastery is the early work of Nicolae Grigorescu (identified by his signature from 1857, Nicu Grigorescu). This article reports information on the working technique, the painting style and the conservation-restoration interventions recently finished for the register of imperial icons. Regarding the conservation state, the specific interventions were challenging for the restoration team due to the complexity of the relation between the degradation factors, types of degradation and the effort to remove their results. During the conservation-restoration process the team noticed that the overpaint and the “repairing” on the imperial icons were not carried out in one single stage or era, but they were repeated interventions using various and inappropriate materials without obeying any minimal rules of painting, which made their removal difficult.
