Summary/Abstract: The last years witnessed a significant increase in archaeological discoveries of antique naval relics, both underwater and terrene, in places once covered by water. Numerous artefacts have been recovered from many of these discoveries, especially (made) of wood, which developed a sensibility to enterprise and develop new research approaches for those in the field, both archaeological and analytical. In particular, in the case of organic discoveries which had been preserved for millennia due to favourable conditions created by the environment, there is an assertion of specific strategies of excavation based on an earlier analysis of the conservation stage of such materials which, in normal conditions, would come under a rapid degradation process. In general, their excavation alters in fact the established balance with the environment and modifies the conditions which stalled or somehow slowed down the degradation mechanism.
