Summary/Abstract: The article is a reflection on the need to preserve the social memory of the soldiers of the border formations of the Second Republic of Poland. In the Polish campaign of 1939, they fought a heroic fight with the German and Soviet armies. Sub-units of the Korpus Ochrony Pogranicza (Border Protection Corps; KOP) and the Straż Graniczna (Border Guard) and units created on their basis have shown outstanding combat qualities. They fought fierce battles against repeatedly stronger opponents, including in the area of Wieluń, on Hel, Węgierska Górka, Wizna, Szacka and Wytyczna. After the war, the history of September events and the memory of the soldiers of the KOP and the Border Guard were secretly suppressed. Important facts about the struggles and battles of the soldiers of the KOP and the Border Guard were deliberately omitted. In the new political reality after 1989, political changes influenced the evolution of Poles’ historical consciousness, which led to an increase in public interest in the memory of the KOP and the Border Guard. The main purpose of the research was to determine the place of defense battles of border guards soldiers from September 1939, as well as to show the activities of local government units, social organizations and Border Guard authorities in restoring and preserving the memory of their heroism in present times. The scientific deliberations in the article are concretised on the following thesis that: Preservation and commemoration of places of struggle of soldiers of border formations in Polish society in September 1939 constitute permanent values for the heritage of the nation and the Polish state, which should be popularized in the process of upbringing and education of young people in particular. generations.
