Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the offer of private Islamic education in Cameroon. It depicts the moves of the Islamic confession in the field of education, the way this confession organized a system of education for the children, based on their religious principles. The educational institutions considered here belong to OESPI, an association acting as a link between the Islamic community and the state. The article focuses on the following aspects: the finality and the educational philosophy of the Islamic confessional order, the offer of private Islamic confessional education in Cameroon, the schooling of the children (boys and girls), the role played by religion in the constitution of schools and in their funding. The study is based on the personal experience of the author and on some fragmentary testimonies of one official of the private Islamic educational order (OESPI). We also availed of the official texts and documents that have regulated the private schooling in Cameroon since 1964. O none side, we attempted a brief historical account of the private Islamic education in Cameroon and, on the other side, we tried to evince the way the Islamic community responded (through new offers of education) to the debates stirred by the issue of private Islamic education in Cameroon, after the installation of democracy, during the 90-s. The data reveal the way the Islamic confession, as an inner part of the educational system, avails of the freedom of education and develops the process of education.
