Summary/Abstract: In the last decades a greater interest has been shown to „nontraditional” sources for development, meaning here the non-economic forms of capital considered to be possible alternatives for those regions and areas that lack the economic capital. The paper intends to give an insight in the theoretical debates on the natural capital, the way this resource can be capitalised and introduced in the local economy. The second part of the paper presents a case-study from the Northern part of Romania, the county of Bistriţa-Năsăud, where both local and county-level stakeholders have considered natural capital as one of the local resources that might be used in local development plans as well as for the enhancement of the local multiple identity.
