Summary/Abstract: From empathy to agency. How to shape the sensitivity of young people in modern school? The aim of the article is a reflection on the condition of the contemporary “politics of sensibility”, at the basis of which we find a thinking about a man combined with a widespread belief that “nothing human is alien to me”. The author concentrates on the need to educate (develop) the humanistic sensibility of the pupils and academic youth living in a global world. Sensibility is treated as: 1) the main task of Polish language education, 2) a value and a welcome socio-cultural competence. A relationship between the concept of empathy and the more content rich category of sensitivity is shown. Theoretical considerations have been “lit up” with proposals for actions, especially aimed at the practical implementation of topics currently “unfashionable”, i.e. old age, illness, suffering and loneliness. Attention has also been paid to the paradox of the 21st century world, dominated by consumerism and convenience, in which a meeting with another human being (in the spirit of empathy and sensitivity) can provide many young people with tangible personal benefits.
