Cultural ellipsis, contextual recovery and disambiguation of professional discourse

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new type of ellipsis, the cultural ellipsis and we study its role and functionality in both the narrative and the professional discourse. We argue that in the narrative discourse the recovery is potential, whereas in the professional discourse, the recovery is compulsory. We focus on the difference between co-text and context to show that the recovery based on the former may generate coherence or incoherence and the recovery based on the latter significantly reduces the ambiguity.
