Summary/Abstract: In this article I intend to throw light on a more sensitive subject: Basarabia and how it was kept alive the Romanian national spirit there in centuries XIX–XX. As soon as Basarabia was absorbed in the Russian Empire, it experienced a continuous process of colonization and submission to the imposed Russian spirit. More then, Tzar’s reign directed the action of denationalization towards school and church, the two pillars of Romanian spirituality. But the Basarabians tried hard to preserve their traditions, language and religious faith. The most important is that Basarabia, a fortress of the Romanian spirit, the „sentinel” of Eastern Europe could never be kneeled down. Basarabia has attained its independence. But we still wait for that „memorable day” when everybody will conclude that Basarabia’s most appropriate place is to join Romania, its Motherland, as it is naturally required by History, Justice and Truth.
