Summary/Abstract: The authors analyze the topic of national identity, as it appears in the turn of the tensions between the crisis of the national identity and the demand of European integration. First, the paper displays a picture of the Romanian people perceptions and attitudes towards the European integration. Based on these data, the authors raised some questions about the future of the Europe face to the candidate countries to the European family, candidates such as Romania is; questions about the psycho-social problems and challenges which the two kinds of countries will encounter in the next decades; and, finally, they raised some issues referring to the role of the social psychologists in analyzing, predicting and managing social processes with dysfunctional potentialities. Finally, the authors develop the idea of the necessity of promoting the concept of European identity (Euro-identity), which should be stipulated in a desired and here-suggested Charter of the European Identity. Thus, they hope that the European cohesion will be strengthened, and potential ethnic and/or national tensions inside the European borders will be diminished.
