Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses disciplinary communication from the point of view of extra-linguistic factors that shape what is now called discipline specific discourse. The area of investigation lies at the intersection of EST and EAP and the case studies here is that of the language used in communicating research and knowledge in academic contexts in a rather young engineering discipline, Mechatronics. The identity of the discourse community is probed by means of questionnaire administration, direct conversation with practitioners and literature review.
