Criticism and Irrevocability, Or: A Partner with a Moustache

Subject(s): Studies of Literature

Keywords: postmodernism; modernism; literary criticism

Summary/Abstract: Skrendo discusses Tomasz Bocheński’s Tango bez Edka: Eseje o literaturze współczesnej [A Tango without Edek: Essays on Contemporary Literature] (Łódź 2018), which is conceived on a broad comparative scale and spans philosophy and literature. On the one hand Bocheński touches on Heidegger (das Man; Gerede), on the other hand he explores literary writers such as Witkacy, Mrożek and Różewicz. Skrendo critiques Bocheński’s criticism of postmodernism without, however approving of postmodernism. Referring to the metaphor in the title of Bocheński’s book, Skrendo suggests that today it is impossible to dance without Edek, and that it is better to find a modus vivendi with this representative of contemporary populism than to exclude him.
