Summary/Abstract: Masculinity is generally associated with hegemony, supremacy and violence, the focal point of various male formations – including those that are excluded. Mazurkiewicz explores the unique situation of Poles in the nineteenth century, when neither male hegemony in the strict sense was able to develop, nor Foucaultian biopolitics as a practice of power towards citizens. Poland’s historical difference ultimately redefines both concepts. This article is part of the forthcoming Siła i słabość: O upadku męskości hegemonicznej w Polsce [Strength and Weakness: On the Fall of Hegemonic Masculinity in Poland] about to be released by the IBL Publishing House. This is a pioneering study on “Polish masculinity” in nineteenth-century Polish literature.
