Summary/Abstract: This article provides an overview of the history of the 16th-17th century popular genre: the emblems. We make a short summary of the characteristics of humanist emblem books: presenting the first representative, the Emblemata of Alciato. The form and content of the emblems were changing in the course of time. Georgette de Montenay wrote the very first religious emblem book. This article also presents the Jesuit emblem tradition. In the 17th century the text of the emblem became more important, in contrast with the picture. These were used by Jesuits mainly as starting points for private meditation. We present here a Latin emblem book (Hermann Hugo: Pia desideria) and a Hungarian representative (Hajnal Mátyás: Szíves könyvecske).
