Summary/Abstract: The pensioner problem carries the nature of the transforming social reality in our country. Thus the situation of the pensioners has role of a basic indicator of the total situation of society. The basic demographic indicators in our country are extremely troublesome. Thus the relative share of the pensioners grows continuously (with little exceptions) in the continuously decreasing population number. The number of employed in the national economy in 1995 has decreased by 1,054.1 thousand persons as compared to 1989. The share of the pensioners to all employed has increased from 50.6% in 1989 to 72.8% in 1995. The basic macroeconomic data are also unfavourable: the volume of the gross national product decreases if inflation in December 1990 were 100 then in September 1996 it is 12592.0. The article gives data of a survey on independent (one-member and two-member) pensioner households, carried out by the Institute of Demography.
