Summary/Abstract: A thorough comprehension and an accurate economic asessment of art crime, a relatively recent global phenomenon ranging from theft, forgery, archaeological looting to the newly added litany of money-laundering crimes, is no easy task. Vastly anonymous, cases in which art becomes the object of transactions between private parties often remain underreported; equally, a large number of fakes and forgeries are virtually under the radar, while the illicit traffic in archaeological cultural goods has grown into an epidemic beyond the control of law enforcement agencies. The paper is aimed at providing an in-depth understanding this phenomenon by firstly immersing the reader into an art forger’s mind, explaining their educational background, modi operandi, forging skills and techniques.
