Summary/Abstract: Infrastructure is one of the twelve pillars of competitiveness of economies. Railway infrastructure as one of the basic foundations of competitiveness is a kind of backbone of the economy, which is why it is so important for ensuring effective functioning and development of the economy. The aim of the study is to show barriers to the development of transport of goods by rail in Poland. The article presents the state of railway transport in Poland and the analysis of the assumptions of the Sustainable Transport Development Strategy Project until 2030. This project assumes an increase in road transport by a minimum of 196 million tons in 2015–2030, and rail transport increases by at least 30 million tons in 2015–2030, which is 6.5 times less than in road transport.
