Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Valeriiy Shevchuk’s novel In the humble field... (“Na poli smyrennomu…”) as a pre-text to the “Kyiv-Pechersk Lives of Holy Fathers”. It has been studied that, starting from the original source, the writer modernizes his work, uses new plot lines, psychologizes historical characters, striving to consider them as ordinary people, full of deep feelings and passions. Reinterpreting the pretext, the modern author uses it at the level of the intertextual game, somehow ironizes its content and introduces the ideas of the primary source in the contemporary moral-ethical context.
