Summary/Abstract: In the first chapters of his novel Leonov imitates the style of Russian fable and “folk” manner of telling. In three fantastic scenes of the final part the author presents acarnival vision of the presented reality and Russian history. The author also refers to Gogol’s tradition in order to show a dramatic “breakthrough” made by the Peter I epoch in the consciousness and culture of the nation.
