Summary/Abstract: The author of the article has proved that in the initial stage of the development of modernism in Russia, i.e. in the 50’s of the nineteenth century, in literature, painting, and music which are within the sphere of influences of this trend, Western inspiration dominates. This is an expression of a wish to include “new” artists into general European cultural process. In the second period of development of modernism in Russia, in the first years of this century takes place a distinct turn towards national traditions, revindication of the recognized values, the cult of folk art, and not rarely, the rebirth of national Messianism.
