Summary/Abstract: On the example of selected works by Russian poets-symbolists and certain works of painting of the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries the author showed in the article in what way the fundamental tendencies of cultural process of an epoch influence the various kinds of art. He also paid attention to the reluctant reception of the works of symbolists, by critics and great numbers of people receiving arts, and characterized the common features of the then painting and literature: subjectivism, belief in utopian programmes of changes in the society through art, escapism, manifest mainly in the form of retrospectivism, tendencies towards stylization. When characterizing the art at the time of the Russian revolution the author also paid attention to the return of the masters to the national and folk sources and enthusiasm for folklore.
