Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with V. Garshin’s connections with the Russian paintings of the second half of the nineteenth century, not so much in the respect of the authors personal contacts with various painters or his work as a critic of paintings, but from the point of view of the role and character of traces of paintings in the ways of their artistic concretion of the picture of presented reality. A particular emphasis is put on relations and parallels in the artistic output between Garshin and various paintings made by such painters as V. Vereshchagin and I. Repin. Connections with the works of N. Jaroshenko and V. Vasnecov have been pointed out. It is believed, that Garshin’s interests were basically focussed on the pictures in which horror and the suggestive power of presenting reality were not rendered in the way typical for realism. In the opinion of the author of the article Garshin did not consider his works to be mere illustrations of paintings, Garshin’s works contained only selected motives of certain paintings always related to the character and the aesthetic demands of his prose. Therefore, it seems that paintings constituted for Garshin one of the sources forthe artistic creation where expression, tragic nature and horror found their place.
