Summary/Abstract: Disagreeing with the critics’ general opinion as to the secondary role of the Nature images in the structure of Garshin’s works, the author points out that the writer did not treat the landscape lightly what is more, he based it on the innovatory achievements of the latest artistic trends. Garshin’s creative search manifests itself not only in his attempts at new solutions to the organization of spatial relations, but also in the maxim al subjectivization of Nature. This subjective approach to Nature was in accord with the postulate of unsual, emotional compactness in art which directy conveys the writer’s feelings. For this reason the subjective vision of Nature “broken up by the prism of individual consciousness” replacedin his prose the traditional convention of generalized landscape, one that is made up of a series of objective, descriptively accurate elements. The author of the article has investigated the process of the formation of this new structure of landscape in Garshin’s prose, confronting it with the analogical phenomena in impressionistic and secessionistic painting
