Summary/Abstract: The author of the article considers it purposeful to differentiate among accent in the systemof language, speech and text. One can observe a characteristic regularity on the plane of language: a fixed place of accent in the system favours the shift of word accent (in various word forms) from one element to another, and vice versa — the lack of the permanent place of accent in the system facilitates fixing of accent on some definite element of the word.Accent can have a distinctive function only in these cases in which it is connected not witha place in the system but with some definite element of a word (form). In speech the place of accent depends on the intonation of the sentence and extralinguistic factors, eg. the emotional state of the speaker. The sentence stating that accent in a given language falls on the first or on the second or the last syllable, refers only to the plane of language. In a text the place of accent in a word depends on these elements of the sentence with which the given word is related.
