Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to, relying on relevant historical material and sources, contextualize and illuminate the political biography of Grand Vizier Mehmed-pasha Sokolović. Conceived in several thematically interdependent chapters, the review article deals in chronological order with the problem of ideological interpretations of national and religious identity, and the developing phases of Sokolović's military and political career in the service of the Ottoman Empire
