Summary/Abstract: Romanian cinema is searching for answers that can free Romanians from questions haunting their conscience for decades on end. Contemporary Romanian cinematography owes much to the way this conscience is unveiled. Prisoners of their history, the protagonists of Romanian films are caught in a constant struggle to escape their past, hence the predilection for violence of language and crudeness of the scenes. Three of the films under discussion, The Senator of the Snails, California Dreamin´ and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days are particularly emblematical of this.
