Summary/Abstract: Balkanism, Byzantinism and Orientalism are disciplines that originate in the study of the mechanisms of European and Occidental centrism. Balkan alterity becomes a Homeric question, especially in the political discourse, concerned as it is with managing the identity crisis of the European South-East, revived starting with the Balkan wars and stretched along the decades after the First World War. The problem of the identities of the European South-East offers the ground for the conflicting or as the case may be peaceful developments in this strategic part of the old continent. By virtue of its composition, that of an ethnic mosaic, it requires a methodology which draws on the conceptual instruments of the social sciences.
