Scientist Petru Poni – Pioneer in Several Fields

Summary/Abstract: Petru Poni (Săcăreşti, Iaşi, 1841–1925) was chemist, mineralogist and a founder of the Romanian School of Chemistry. He attended primary courses in Târgu Frumos and then the College National from Iasi and at 18 years obtained a scholarship at Sorbonne. He conducted research on the chemical composition of the Romanian Petroleum and mineral water. Petru Poni organized chemistry laboratories for scientific research. He was the author of the first textbooks of Physics and Chemistry. In 1878 he was appointed professor at the University of Iasi, where he taught for 33 years. In 1879 he became member of the Romanian Academy. Petru Poni collaborated in the establishment of scientific societies.
