Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper was to establish the total and individual contribution of family context variables (perception of parental behavior of mothers and fathers, and perception of family adaptability and cohesion), personality traits of the adolescent (Big five personality traits and Locus of Control) and some socio-demographic features (age and professional qualification of parents, number of children in the family and order of birth) in explaining the variance of self-esteem in adolescents. The research sample consisted of 425 participants (200 female and 225 male). The average age of participants was M=18 (SD=.72). The data was collected using group work method and the following instruments were applied: Socio-demographic Features Questionnaire, Children’s Report of Parental Behavior Inventory, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale, Big Five Personality Factors Selfreported Scale, Externality Scale and Self-esteem Scale. The results of hierarchical analyses indicate that described set of predictor variables account for 44% of total variance of self-esteem in girls and 40% of total variance of self-esteem in boys. It was found that variables of family context and adolescent’ personality traits contribute significantly in explaining the variance of self-esteem for both, girls and boys, while the contribution of socio-demographic features was not significant in any of the group. Analyses conducted separately for the subsample of girls and boys have provided a better insight into results and showed that patterns of these relations are somewhat different for girls and boys, namely, how predictors of self-esteem are not the same for these two groups. The results of this study clearly indicate the importance of perception of parental warmth and acceptance, as well as personality traits of adolescent, as an important protective factor, which has effects on the adequate self-image in adolescents of both gender.
