Summary/Abstract: Tunisian society in the 19th century: organization, powers and authority during French colonization (1880-1883). This article aims to analyse authority in traditional Tunisian society of the 19th century. A society marked by tribal ties and the influence of religious leaders. Authority takes many forms; it varies constantly, and obeys outside influences. The community bond and the religious fact are inseparable segments in the life of the tribes. In this classless society, the power has difficulty in imposing its authority, hence the arrangements and concessions of the central power in order to calm the most turbulent tribes.
