Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the 20th century Galați was just a city-port, where you met all kinds of people. In the city were many luxury restaurants on the main streets, but also many places for the ordinary people. However, by the 1930s, a first-class restaurant that offered special services for banquets, at private or official events, would distinguish between the city's luxury restaurants: the “Suré” restaurant, located opposite the municipal park, on the town’s promenade. The elite of Galați used to meet there and the wine cellar was also richly stocked. The “Suré” restaurant was famous in Galați because of its rarities and the ascending tariff, and its reputation had passed beyond the borders of Covurlui county (part of the current Galați county), being considered one of the best restaurants in the country, next to „Enescu and Iordache” in Bucharest, “Renier” in Constanta, “Bufnița” or “Zur Eule” in Sibiu, and “The Carpathian Bear” in Busteni, as Nicolae Steinhardt mentioned in the Journal of Happiness. In this paper we will present some aspects of the past of this famous restaurant, its moments of glory, of greatness, the periods of agony and its return, until the moment of the definitive disappearance of it from the Galați, because of the World War II and its consequences.
